Lovely 53 year-old SHELBY FORREST buckles her seat belt and closes her eyes as the airplane fills with passengers. She gulps some breaths of fusty air and tries to calm herself from the crippling anxiety that has consumed her since the life altering telephone call of the week before
With a fisted knot twisting her stomach, she forces her head into the headrest, trying to chill out. Her brain scans the years and the pain of cobbling together a life in the wake of her devastating loss. In a roller coaster ride of events, the pressure from keeping her old secret soon blooms into acute symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
This beautifully crafted, poignant story takes the reader on a journey through one woman’s experience as she struggles to come to terms with her life choices. Coping with loss, moving forward, and the social issues of the 1950’s-1970’s surrounding the controversy regarding an adoptee’s right to know vs. a mother’s right to privacy, are central themes to this captivating drama. Set in 2005 against a backdrop of the War in Iraq, the action packed plot makes this psychological fiction hard to put down.
Early readers describe this psychological drama as “stunning” with well developed characters and an intriguing and suspenseful plot.

The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest eBook Donna Friess Reviews
I started reading Shelby and was so captivated, I had finished it the same afternoon. This book stirred many, many emotions, hope and openness being predominant. In some sections, I was moved to tears. This is a must read for anyone with secrets. Thoroughly enjoyed!
Loved the writing and the character development. The research involved with the backing of the story must have been intense as it was so well thought out and matched the story so well. I now have a new appreciation for those who give up a child and those who are placed with other families. A wonderful look at lives that often are ignored. I highly recommend!
Dr. Donna Friess took me with this book into a journey with her character Shelby. A stunning reading and easy to follow story. I couldn't stop reading and wanted to know more about each character in the book.. So fascinating, so different from each other, and yet so connected. I felt a warm and cozy reading about the journey and difficult decisions that Shelby had to overcome in her life...
Thank you Donna

The unraveling of Shelby Forrest is a beautifully written story winding its way from the Pacific Northwest to the South and back again. Shelby comes to terms, as many of us do, with decisions made over the course of a life. The author conveys her characters' emotions and relational interactions from a perspective of true knowing with very tangible qualities. We see the gentler side of humanity here. The message of both hope and love was inspiring. I LOVED this book. Perhaps a sequel for Mrs. Shelby Forrest and her beautiful family?
"I really liked the characters in the book and how they played out emotionally. At times I could really feel the raw emotions of anxiety, stress, and inner pain, but I also felt the love and it made me smile. The book flowed very well and kept my interest as it always took an unexpected twist or turn. I had a hard time putting it down. This book will appeal to women everywhere. This is a book that I would keep on my book shelf!" - Dawn Schanderl
Timely subject matter, well written and thoughtful with lots of authentic historical information. Unfortunately, a bit too much back story makes it drag. I ended up skimming it just to find out if Shelby really does unravel.
Turns out, she doesn't. Not only that, but the ending was a little too unbelievable. Life's never that neat.
It's no surprise to learn that Donna's debut novel has been selected as 'Spirited Woman's Pick of the Year'. Having previously read her much acclaimed autobiography, Cry the Darkness, I expected another gut-grabbing story. But this poignant book unravels even more conflicting emotions an adoptee's right to know and a mother's right to privacy. To turn psychological fiction into an intriguing plot, through a meander of unexpected events, requires indepth knowledge of the subject. But Dr Donna Friess, life coach and grief counselor, is no amateur at using key words to disentangle crippling emotions. The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest is a testimony to the power of love, and makes a perfect read for Valentine's Day.
