This book is a must-have for piano buyers. Be sure to get the latest Supplement that includes brand and price info for the current model year also, but this book has great educational info about the piano buying process. Also, I ended up deciding to buy a used piano, and this book provided more relevant info about the piano year I was considering.Tags : The Piano Book: A Guide to Buying a New or Used Piano [Larry Fine, Douglas R. The Piano Book A Guide to Buying a New or Used Piano Larry Fine Douglas R Gilbert Keith Jarrett 9780961751203 Books Reviews
To paraphrase a great line from The Untouchables, a piano buyer (especially a novice) shopping for a piano without this book is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Even if you know very little about pianos, this book will make you a well-informed shopper, able to avoid being ripped-off. It is well written and very readable. Although it is four years old, it contains sections on shopping for a piano over the internet, researching pianos on electronic bulletin boards, etc. Despite one of the reviews below, this book DOES contain ratings of most piano brands; Larry Fine gives 1 through 5 stars to the major brands, and even breaks down the ratings by the various piano series offered by some of the majors. VERY HELPFUL.
The only significant drawback (and certainly not the fault of Larry Fine) is the fact that lots of "house brands" are made by other major manufacturers. It is difficult to know what you are getting with these house brands. Other than general quality comparisons based on the parent manufacturer, the book is really not useful in evaluating these pianos.
This book is highly recommended. You MUST also get the most current annual supplement to have current model numbers and pricing. Money well spent.
Unfortunately, I purchased a piano before reading this book. Fortunately, based on the information in this book, I made the right decision. I just happened to be lucky. But I wish I had bought the book earlier.
For the person wanting to buy a new or used piano, this book is a must have. Most people want to know what the best piano is for the money. Using the information in this book, you will be able to figure that out. And without this book, you could spend years spinning your wheels.
The bottom line is - quality costs money. Buy the best piano you can afford up front. Don't buy a spinet or mini-grand. Just by reading this book I found out they are a waste of money. I wouldn't have known that otherwise. Read this book. You will save yourself time, headaches, and money. I bought a Yamaha U1 in case you were wondering.
This book provides a fascinating insight into many different pianos and the complex history of major piano companies and their intertwining. It also provides a clear description of the many subtle differences in design and construction of many major piano brands and models.
This definitely helped me in choosing my first grand piano. More than anything else, it helped me understand some of the terms that the piano technician talked about. That said, I don't think this replaces getting a piano technician to inspect a piano. Getting a piano technician to inspect the piano before I purchased it was the best thing I could have done. Some of the discussions in the book were too technical. I would have liked a more practical approach, and a less technical discussion of the topics.
If you are buying either a new or used piano "with strings" (as opposed to a purely digital [no strings] piano), you MUST buy this book.
If you are buying a NEW piano, you also need to buy the yearly "Supplement" book (Current version is "2001-2002 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book", also by Larry Fine).
Together, these two books do not cost much. You WILL save hundreds and perhaps thousands of dollars.
Here is what is covered in each book
THIS BOOK - "The Piano Book". This book has chapters on How a Piano Works, Buying a New Piano, Buying a Used Piano, Piano Moving, Piano Care, and a special chapter entitled "A Consumer Guide to New and Recently Made Pianos", which includes brand by brand listings and rankings in a number of categories. This book DOES NOT include price information. This book has 234 pages of content!!
THE SUPPLEMENT - "2001-2002 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book". This book provides "suggested" list prices for almost every manufacturer and model, AND discusses % discounts you can expect. For example, did you know, that the average discount off of list price is between 15-25%?
This book is published every year in August, based on data from that Spring. For example, this "2001-2002" was published in August 2001, based on data from June 2001. This means that the "2002-2003" version should be available in August 2002. This book has 98 pages of discount and list price information!!
The author has his own website (pianobook.com) which is also listed in the book, and even offers private phone consulatations (for a fee, given your specific needs).
BOTTOM LINE Buy both of these books. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed!!!
I read this book before my very first piano purchase, and the information Mr. Fine shared in the chapters "Buying a New/Used Piano" was invaluable. I entered the retailer's floor thinking that I would buy a brand new piano but was most impressed by the sound, tone, feel of a 98-year-old vintage German piano. I took The Piano Book with me and read the history of the European manufacturer while trying out many pianos on the floor. I made the purchase after comparing many pianos and saved thousands of dollars because I was prepared to negotiate a fair price based on the 2007-2008 Supplement and The Piano Book. The combination of both books helped me differentiate facts from the retailer's selling points, which is essential when committing to large investments. Being informed also led to more respectful negotiations between the customer and the shop owner. My experience when purchasing pianos, cars, or other big-ticket items is that retailers appreciate it when they perceive a knowledgeable customer, and they do not attempt to take advantage of you as forthrightly.
This book is a must-have for piano buyers. Be sure to get the latest Supplement that includes brand and price info for the current model year also, but this book has great educational info about the piano buying process. Also, I ended up deciding to buy a used piano, and this book provided more relevant info about the piano year I was considering.
