Russell Powell's "America's Apple" is, at heart, a celebration of the role apples have played in our country's history. In addition to being an award-winning magazine editor and video producer, Powell has worked in the apple industry for more than 15 years. He brings this rich experience, plus his curiosity as a journalist, his skill as an editor, and his love of narrative to bear on an unfolding story that is enhanced and deepened by captivating color photographs by Bar Lois Weeks. My favorite parts of the book are portraits (both verbal and visual) of multi-generational farmers who devote their lives to growing apples despite daunting challenges; abundant mouth-watering recipes for apple pies, squares, crisp, cakes, pandowdy, and various ciders; and an index of 120 varieties of apples meticulously photographed by Bar Weeks. The book becomes a guide to an industry central to American history, a cookbook, a photographic feast, and a celebration of people who love and honor the land. It is written with the grace and passion of one who, himself, honors the land.

You will gain a much greater appreciation of what it takes to bring a farm's bounty to your table. A wonderful read for the whole family.
The apple is likely the most singular iconic food in America, synonymous with taste, nutrition, westward expansion and a host of themes in americna life, which Powell's book delves into with a fresh set of eyes. The author has a wide knwoledge of apples and their place in america, but this book takes that beyond the coffee table books on american farming and into ad etailed discussion of everythign from the history of varieties, ancient and current trends in growing, pressures on the farms themselves, pest managment, farm labor, and whats ahead. Anyone with interests in food, food production, food security, or with just a desire to read a really well written book with captivating pictures should pick this up!
